Reflecting on My Fellowship at Yale University

During my Fellowship at Yale University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, I had the incredible opportunity to join Prof. Fuad Abujarad’s Digital Health Lab, where I explored how technology can improve access to healthcare. My Master’s Thesis, investigating the societal effects of criminal background check systems on Michigan’s childcare sector, was one significant outcome of this journey.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. Fuad Abujarad and the Yale School of Medicine for warmly welcoming me into their team and providing the chance to contribute to meaningful research. Equally, I deeply appreciate Prof. Stephan Krusche from the Technical University of Munich for his invaluable guidance, continuous support, and encouragement throughout my research.

Special thanks also go to MiLEAP and Michigan State for entrusting me with their datasets, as well as to Prof. J. Franklin Wharam for his methodological insights, which greatly enhanced my understanding and analytical approach.

The Intersection of Humans, Technology, and Legislation

Farewell picture

This Fellowship profoundly impacted my growth as a computer scientist, reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of data. More than ever, I recognize how crucial it is to consider the intersection of humans, technology, and larger societal systems—especially legislation.

Thoughtful interpretation and careful analysis of data are essential in crafting impactful laws and regulations. When data is misunderstood or misinterpreted, the unintended consequences can disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Here, computer scientists have a unique role: by applying analytical frameworks, sophisticated tools, and rigorous thinking, we can help policymakers develop fair, effective, and human-centered policies.

Personal Reflections and Connections

The crazy gang

Beyond academics and research, I’m especially thankful to Chelsea Edwards, Andrew Loza, Prof. Ted Melnick, Anirudh Goyal, Ivan Velasquez, Uche Okoronkwo, and the broader Yale community for making this Fellowship professionally and personally rewarding.

While it’s difficult to say goodbye, I leave Yale deeply inspired and full of enthusiasm for the future. I’m eager for the new challenges and collaborations ahead and remain committed to exploring how thoughtful innovation can improve lives.

Onward and upward—Go Bulldogs! 💙
